The Garbage disposal has become one of the most indispensable appliances in the modern kitchen. It speeds up food preparation and clean-up by chewing up food scraps and debris into small enough pieces to pass through the drain line without getting clogged.

Garbage disposals reduce food preparation time

Garbage disposal is an electrical powered or water powered devices (less common) that attaches to the kitchen sink drain line between the sink drain and the p-trap. Typically the dishwasher drain line also runs through the disposal so that any food scraps left on dishes can be ground up before going down the drain pipe.

How A Garbage Disposal Works

They work by using an electric motor to turn a horizontal round disk surrounded by a shredder ring. Attached to this disk are short impellers that grind and push the debris through the shredder as the disk spins. This process grinds up food and debris into little pieces that can then pass through the drain pipe safely.

Garbage Disposal Types

There are two types available: continuous-feed and batch-feed. Continuous-feed models are activated by a switch as you put in food scraps and running water and will continue to run until they are switched off. Batch-feed models are operated by turning a special stopper after you have loaded it with food debris. Since this type can only be activated while the stopper is inserted, these disposals are safer.
