Garbage Disposal Installation

Installing a garbage disposal is a fairly advanced do-it-yourself project involving electrical and plumbing work and should only be taken on if you are sure about your abilities.

Notes and Cautions before you start

  1. Do not run the faucet while installing the disposal.
  2. Make sure the electric circuit is off before making any electrical connections.
  3. A new dedicated circuit should be run to power the new disposal. This needs to be completed before continuing with the installation of the disposal.

Sump Pump Installation Steps

  1. Remove the existing drainpipe and p-trap using the pipe wrench or large channel-lock pliers.
  2. Remove the strainer body from the sink by unscrewing the large nut that holds it in place underneath the sink. Scrape of the old plumbers putty from around the sink opening.
  3. Place a < bead of plumbers putty around the drain opening in the sink and install the new sink flange into the drain opening and press it into place. Under the sink, slide the fiber gasket and backup mounting ring onto the sleeve. Now slip on the mounting ring and snap ring.
  4. Tighten the three mounting screws on the mounting ring. Make sure that you alternate the tightening of each screw so that the the mounting bracket is evenly and tightly seated against the bottom of the sink.
  5. Remove the plate on the bottom of the disposer to expose the wiring. Move the garbage disposal under the sink and connect the white wire from the disposal with the white wire from the power source. Repeat with the black wires from the disposal and power source. Lastly, connect the ground wire from the disposal to the ground on the disposal. Replace the plate to cover the wires.
  6. If you intend on running your dishwasher through the garbage disposal you need to tap out the dishwasher knockout plug using a screw driver and hammer.
  7. Align the disposer with the three mounting ears on the sink mounting assembly. Holding the disposer in place, turn the lower mounting ring until all three mounting ears are locked into the mounting assembly.
  8. Install the discharge tube and its gasket to the disposer. Turn the disposer until the discharge tube aligns with the drain trap. If the discharge tube is too long, it should be cut to fit. If it is not long enough, you need to purchase extension pieces to make up the difference.
  9. If using a dishwasher, connect the dishwasher tube to the disposer.
  10. Once it is installed, lock the disposer to the sink mounting assembly using the special wrench that came with the unit.
  11. Now you are ready to test the disposal for leaks. Turn on the electricity to the disposal to test its operation.
