1 out of 5 stars Failed due to corrosion, replacing with different model   February 11, 2008

Like others have noted here, my 444 started to leak on account of corrosion of the unit's housing. Mine was about 10yrs old and was used VERY infrequently (perhaps twice a month). I plan to replace it myself and I wanted to buy an identical unit to make the job easy, but on account of the other reviews I decided it would be unwise to purchase the same unit again. I investigated other options. The Insinkerator Evolution Compact Disposer has, based on the mfr spec sheets, almost the same dimensions as the 444 (not EXACTLY the same, but very similar); it is the most dimensionally similar of any upper-tier Insinkerator disposer in current production. Notably, it appears to employ the same cam-lock mounting method for attaching it to the sink, so swapping it in should be a no-brainer. The wastewater discharge is located the same vertical distance beneath the sink on both units, i.e., 6"; however, the 444's discharge is 5" offset from the vertical and the Compact's is offset 5.75" (this information comes from the mfrs datasheets). Therefore, I expect that I can re-use the same wastewater trap and connect it to the original plumbing with just a little "fiddling". The electrical access is in the same location on both, so wiring it should be simple too. So, with these things in mind, I would encourage others to consider the same option.

1 out of 5 stars It's a Leaker!   December 30, 2007

Ours started leaking out of the bottom after about 4 years of light use. I can't believe I paid that much for this thing!

I had one of these before and replaced it with the same unit, as I think that that makes it easier for the plunbing connections.

1 out of 5 stars Defective design   October 3, 2006

Mine started leaking after five years. That might sound ok, but we give it pretty light use, and a disposer should last at least ten. A little online research shows that this is a common problem and is due to a design defect. The casing rusts through and can't be fixed. ISE has known about this problem for years, and in fact came out with a modified design in 2005 that tried to address this problem.

ISE refused to do a thing for me. My next disposer will be from a different company, one that cares about its customers.

1 out of 5 stars breaks down a few months after warranty expires   September 20, 2006

The manufacturer's warranty is 4 years. My disposer started leaking only a few months past the warranty expiration date. I checked online reviews - many people have reported the same problem. This might be designed that way, otherwise you'd be stuck with the same disposer for 10 years - that's how much they care for you...
